Should I replace my own valve cover gasket? I need a new valve cover gasket b/c oil is getting into my spark plugs. I called a store and the gasket is only $25 and my mechanic said to put it in will be $35 of labor. I am on a very tight budget lately so should I attempt to do the job myself? I can do alot of normal car maintenance like replacing spark plugs, wires, oil, air filter so I dont feel scared about pulling the head off to install the gasket. Infiniti . My 1989 Honda Accord LXI Won't StartThe Honda Accord LXI is a sportier Accord that has fuel injection rather than carburetors. In 1989, the LXI was available as a sedan or a hatchback. If your LXI is not starting properly, the battery, spark plugs, fuel filter and fuel injectors are some of the basic things to check before seeking a professional's help. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Battery and Spark Plugs Step by Step : 1 Open the hood of your engine and look for corrosion on spark plugs or the battery. 2 Clean the battery. Pour soda over the terminals of the battery and gently scrub with a wire brush. Tighten connections using a wrench. The carbonation in the soda helps to break down corrosion. 3 Clean the spark plugs. Any corrosion on the spark plugs can be cleaned with a wire brush. 4 Remove the spark plug wire and place it on a metal part of the engine. Have a helper start the car and look for a blue spark. No spark indicates that your spark plugs are not firing properly, which leads to the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders not igniting properly. Replace spark plugs. 5 Turn the key in the ignition to the "ON" position but do not start. Turn on interior lights. If they do not come on, your battery may be dead and will need to be replaced. If the lights are dim, the battery is drained and will need to be recharged. Fuel Components Step by Step : 1 Turn the key in the ignition and listen for a knocking or thumping sound. This typically indicates the fuel system is causing the issue. In a 1989 Honda Accord, the fuel filter should be changed at 30,000 miles or it runs the risk of becoming clogged. The fuel injectors should also be cleaned. A dirty filter or clogged injectors will cause the engine to run sluggishly and then can cause it not to run. 2 Clean your fuel injection system. Place the new filter onto the pump, and turn it clockwise until snug. 4 Remove the drain pan from under the van. Raise the frame off the jack stand, and lower it to the ground.
